Real life Texas Hold'em hands - good and bad examples

Some real life examples of hands I have played when I started playing online - some are ok, but there are certainly also some that I'm not too proud of.

"Bad beat"

This is an example of how you can loose on a almost perfect hand. I was dealt AA and raised when I had the chance. 4 players stayed pre flop building a nice pot and I got a set in the flop, so I bet to the maximum and 2 players stayed in. The turn was a 6 and when I saw the betting I got suspicious. Still I was compelled to see my worst nightmare so I paid 0,5$ to see 6666 as I more or less expected. In retrospect I should have saved the money but it was a big pot and I think my opponent's previous betting was a bit loose.

Paying to see the next card

Here I played a typical "Hollywood hand" where I clearly put to much value in my face cards. I raised pre-flop and was called by two players. The flop was rags, opening a flush draw and my best option at this point would clearly be to get out of there. I tried a bluff to see if the other two would fold but they both called me. On the turn I initially checked, but for reasons I cannot explain I decided to call a 0,5$ bet. So far I paid 1$ to see the first 4 cards and I have absolutely nothing when the river gave me the J to bet on even that I knew I was underdog and off course I lost to the top pair. Very stupid play!

Winning a long shot

Here I wanted to try out an A2s combo even though it's a bit loose actually. Since there was no pressure post flop, I decided to see the turn with a call (hoping for an A or a third 2 to make a set while not to get caught in a check-raise trap). Since I got what I asked for I raised my opponent's bet, who then folded, handing me the pot - not unlucky but still played with some thought.

Could have, would have, should have - and then not

Sometimes you want to kick yourself for not taking a chance. Here I folded a Q8o as described in the book, only to see QQ in the flop making top set and eventually full house but the pot goes to a KKKQQ full house. So in the end the hand wasn't strong enough in spite of the luck on the flop. The tight style will not give you the spectacular hands, but you should win in the end if you play your good hands well, adding just a small dose of unpredictability to make sure your opponents doesn't always fold when you bet.

Could have, would have, should have - and then not II

Here I folded a K3o, only to see a K in the flop making top pair but eventually the pot goes to a straight. Notice that the two hands are consequtive - basically same situation as before but cards have no memory ;-)

Watch the position of your pair on the board

In this game I posted BB and subsequently checked to see the flop for "free". After the flop I come out on a bet even though I only have a middle pair but it doesn't shake my opponent who calls. I'm lucky and turns a 6 to make two pairs and I come out on a bet again. Still no shakes and I loose my nerve and check on the river, a 5. My opponent bets and I call and take the pot with two small pairs, just one higher than his. I think he played a bit too loose, only betting on the lowest pair.

More to come

These were some real life experiences, good and bad plays, mostly shown to underline some points in poker strategy. I will soon add more and make them somewhat more readable and also provide link to the strategy point I beleive the hand is making.
